The Avoyelles Animal Welfare Society is looking for volunteers to  their sleeves and show some love to the dogs, the dirt, and the details on Saturday, July 12, starting at 9am until the work is done. 

Join the Society for a community-driven day of hard work and heartfelt purpose as they refresh, reorganize, and revitalize their shelter space. Bring energy, tools, gloves, and big hearts. Water, electrolyte drinks, and energy sustaining snacks will be provided.

The clean-up will take place at the site of the shelter, 1170 Prison Rd. in Cottonport. The Society recommends parking at the ball field across from the shelter. They will be able to taxi people to the shelter and back – the road is rough and there’s not a lot of space for parking at the shelter itself.

During this cleanup, the Society and volunteers will be tackling 13 years’ worth of accumulated items, dirt, and garbage. Expect to encounter pests and vermin.

Dress comfortably in clothes that can get dirty or even be disposed of afterward. The Society also recommends leaving any valuable jewelry at home.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including masks, gloves, shoe covers, and gowns, will be provided. There will also be a “rest and cool off” station with hydration/snacks available.

If volunteers see anything among the items being disposed of that they’d like to take home, they are welcome to, but they will be responsible for removing it from the shelter the same day, with no exceptions. These items will likely need to be cleaned and sanitized once removed to their new home.
