The Avoyelles Arts Council expressed its gratitude via social media last week to to everyone who attended the public reception at Gallery on the Square for their featured artist James Hunter. Mr. Hunter expressed delight with the amount of interest from the community.
James’s exhibit, “Cane River Culture,” is a 20-painting walkthrough of historical plantation life as told to him by his famous folk artist grandmother, Clementine Hunter, and from his own personal experiences growing up with her at Melrose Plantation and with his family at Magnolia Plantation on the Cane River near Natchitoches.
One of the reception’s guests, Mallory Moser, is a self-proclaimed huge Hunter family art fan. Ms. Moser traveled from Eunice for a chance to meet James and see the exhibit. She is also the Director of Operations at La Tasse de Cafe at KVPI radio in Ville Platte. Ms. Moser gave a shout-out to the Avoyelles Arts Council, La Petite Affaire, and Bailey’s during her Thursday morning radio show and proclaimed, “Marksville’s got it going on, y’all!”
“Cane River Culture” will be on exhibit through Sept. 12. Drop by Gallery on the Square, 122 E Mark St, Marksville, Monday-Friday 9am-4pm, for an opportunity to view this wonderful collection of original paintings.
